Welcome to the General Jonathan Moulton House in Hampton, NH, just minutes from beaches. This fine 18th century home is a historic architectural masterpiece featuring a grand two-story entry hall, high ceilings with elaborate stepped moldings, pilasters and raised paneling throughout. Other highlights include original doors with iron strap hinges and box lock hardware; 12 working fireplaces (some featuring Delft tile surrounds); interior window pocket shutters; 13 incorporated window seats in front parlors, center hall and bedrooms; the large kitchen fireplace retaining its original crane and a rare two-story smoking oven.
With more than 4,500 square feet of living space, the flow of rooms in the house is perfect for entertaining. Enter through the original front entrance to a grand center-stair hall connecting the four primary first floor rooms, each with a fireplace. The rooms are also connected by seemingly secret passageways with staircases to the second floor. The first floor consists of a formal parlor, music room, library, office (which was the original keeping room) and dining room which opens up into the eat-in kitchen outfitted with Viking, Wolf and Bosch appliances, a side entrance and a sitting room (which could be a bedroom) with full bath. Connected to the library is a glassed-in three-season dining area with vaulted ceiling that opens onto an outdoor bluestone terrace with a saltwater swimming pool.
The second floor with its four grand-scale bedrooms with fireplaces and center hall has a nicely appointed marble bath and connects to an upper wing that has two additional bedrooms with fireplaces, another full bath, a hall and stairwell.
The full modernized basement, seldom seen in 18th century homes, is accessed through a stairwell from the kitchen and has a wine cellar.
History:
Jonathan Moulton (1726-1787) was an indentured servant and worked as a cabinetmaker until he bought his freedom and became a silversmith, founding what is known today as Towle Silversmiths. He became a captain in the New Hampshire Militia and fought in the French and Indian War and he also fought in the Revolutionary War. Moulton was awarded tracts of land in the Lakes Region for his service and the town of Moultonborough is named after him. He came back to the NH seacoast with a gift of a prized 1200-pound bull for Governor Wentworth, who in turn gave him a tract of land in Hampton.
Moulton built this house in 1769; upon Moulton’s death, the home changed hands many times, becoming legendary with its tales and stories. In 1922, the house was purchased by the Little family. The house was moved onto a new foundation and restored to its former glory. The home was then acquired by the current owners who have been its caretakers for more than 40 years. Historic New England calls the Moulton House “a significant example of Georgian architecture.”
